I Have Four SSCE Credits ~ Boko Haram Leader, Kabiru Sokoto

A Boko Haram leader accused of masterminding the December 25, 2011 bombing of St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Madalla, Niger State, Kabiru Sokoto, on Monday admitted before an Abuja Federal High Court that he wrote and scored four credits in the Senior School Certificate Examination.

A court interpreter had been interpreting proceedings in Sokoto’s ongoing trial over two counts of terrorism. This followed his claim that he does not understand English language.
However, the suspected Boko Haram leader surprised the courtroom when he owned up to the prosecution’s allegations that he sat for and obtained four credits in the SSCE.
Sokoto said he wrote the examination in English Language.
The accused person was under cross examination by prosecuting counsel, Mrs. Chioma Onuegbu, after testifying in his own defence during the continuation of his trial before the court presided by Justice Adeniyi Ademola.
The cross examination suddenly became dramatic when, at a point, Sokoto engaged in arguments with the interpreter over what he perceived to be a wrong interpretation of his response to a question put to him by the prosecutor.
Sokoto and the interpreter argued in Hausa language.
Many in the courtroom, including the judge, were baffled by the development, prompting the prosecutor to say, “He (Sokoto) understands my questions; he has four credits in SSCE, including English Language.”
Speaking through the interpreter, after he was asked whether the information disclosed by the prosecutor was true, Sokoto said, “Yes, I have four credits but not including English Language.”
The trial will continue on October 7, 2013, for adoption of final written addresses.
